Feb. 15th, 2005

So last night was girls' night in celebration of "we don't need your hallmark holiday". As always it was much fun (though I think this may actually be only my second one, but whatever). Came home from school around 6pm and sat chatting with [livejournal.com profile] shprintzah, [livejournal.com profile] kararm and T. who had stopped by. I don't know T. very well but she is nice and I haven't seen her since last year. We talked about everything from medieval history to the Hebrew Hammer and briefly touched on what endocannabinoids do (by briefly I mean I mentioned that my class was about them and the three history majors looked at me with glazed expressions until I shut up). We all had dinner together (not quite re-warmed spaghetti and champagne, yum) and then T. departed while the three of us went to meet E. ([livejournal.com profile] shprintzah's boyfriend's roomate) at the Collidge corner theater. For one night only Collidge Corner was showing The Princess Bride on the big screen. As usual we managed to sit in the section that was laughing when no one else did and [livejournal.com profile] kararm and I started the applause when Inago killed Count Rugen. It was fun and silly and followed by ice cream at J.P. Licks. All in all a very satisfying way to spend the holiday. Tonight is going to be a somewhat more traditional celebration, my sweetie is taking me to Casa di Pedro in Watertown for their fabulous, fabulous chocolate flan...mmmmm flan...oh yeah and we'll eat dinner there too.
Valentine's Day is a very confusing holiday for me. As some of you may or may not know [livejournal.com profile] laurion is my first S.O. ever, of any type, i didn't even do the "going out" thing in 5th grade where you sit together at lunch and that's about it. This means that for all of middle school and high school I dreaded the day. It sucked and reminded me of how much my social life sucked. I think it's a sign of how much more secure I was with myself by the end of high school that I totally forgot the holiday Senior year until half way through the school day.

As a young child I loved the day because I was assured Valntines from all my classmates and candy too. Also my mom wrote us individual Valentine's Day poems every year and also gave chocolate. the poems were to make us feel included, as she and my dad have exchanged hand-written poems on the day for close to four decades now.

Sophmore year of college I had an excellent anti-V-day with friends. We wore black ate Chinese food and watch strand ups on comedy central. The only male in the group gave the rest of us purple roses.

I had a boyfriend for the first time last year and much as I love him and clebrating with him, I dislike how the holiday always made me felt in high school. I even more dislike that the 13th is National single Awareness day, like that will help make people feel better at all. I think celebrating the day of with friends is really the best and then using the time of year to splurge a little extra on your sweetie in the days surrounding. That way you can remid yourself of all the types of love around you. Also i've had a lot of fun by doing both and even more chocolates :).
