The trouble with windows
May. 6th, 2006 09:48 amOzy loves windows. He spends much of his day going from window to window around the house and watching the world. Since the warm weather set in he has especially enjoyed it when a window was opened for him and he could take in the smells as well as the sights and sounds.
Thursday evening I was trying to do my DDR workout in the den and he kept coming in to demand attention. I thought he'd stay quiet and happy if I opened up his favorite window in the den. Luckily I was still holding him when I realized that this particular window has no screen (he was half way out and I had to haul him back in). I had a bit of a panic over what nearly happened, checked the other window in the den (which does have a screen ) opened it and decided to screen check before opening any more windows, lesson learned, case closed.
Apparently screen checking is not enough. Our house is old and has two types of screens. The more usual half-window height metal ones that fit in the frame and old full window height wooden-framed ones that do not lock in place. Ozy's window by his cat perch has be open almost constantly on warm days. Last night around 10pm though he pushed on the wooden screen and it fell out. Around 10:30 I went into that room looking for the cat to cuddle and realized he was gone.
laurion and I searched the street and our woods for him. Around 11:30 I managed to stop crying enough to go to bed. We opened our bedroom window and left the back door with just the screen door shut so we could listen for the cat. We set an alaram foir 6am so we could start looking again before he really missed his breakfast.
At 5:15am I stopped being able to sleep. A few minutes later
laurion got up. He had managed to hear a plaintive meow that I missed and Ozy happily came in when called. He's eaten and slept and he seems fine (though a bit dirty). Even though he was only gone a short while they were some of the worst 6 hours I've ever had. We're going to fix the screen in place before we open his window again, because heading to bed without Ozy purring on my feet was an experience I don't need to repeat anytime soon.
