As recommended by my school I'm getting a titer to check if i need a rabies booster now that it's been two years since I got my pre-exposure series. Though it's not expensive I called my health insurance to find out if they would cover it and also to find out if they'd cover an MMR titer since that is being recommended to most people as the vaccines aren't as long-lived as first thought. After running through their stupid menu and being put on hold I finally got to talk to someone. I explained that I wanted to know if a titer for my rabies vaccine was covered, she put me on hold to check. She came back and asked if it was spelled tider, what it was and if it was some sort of test.
*breathe in breathe out*
I gave her the correct spelling and told her that it was serum test used to determine if antibody levels in the blood were at a protective level or if a vacine needed to be boostered (decided against telling her that in other situations it can be used diagnostically, though not for rabies). We then went on a 15 minute merry-go-round of her telling me that it wasn't routinely covered but if it wasn't being used as a screen there was a list of appropriate codes she could send me that my doctor could use to get it paid for. I explained again that in this case it could only be used as a screening test and tried to verify that it would not be covered, even the recommended MMR screen. she kept repeating her line and giving me examples of blood tests that are covered and I ended up explaining how an antibody titer is in fact NOTHING LIKE a CBC, chem panel or serum potassium level!
I don't understand, the last two times I've called my provider the service was efficient and knowledgeable. The guy I talked to to find out if my pre-exposure vaccine would be covered since I was in a high risk occupation even agreed with me that it was stupid that it was not covered. The woman I talked to about my surgery expenses was efficient and pleasant. This girl was so single-mindedly thick skulled that I nearly tore my hair out during the call.
