The globe today had an article on a girl who goes to catholic school who is not allowed to bring a same sex friend as her prom date. An official from the school gave a quote about why the opposite sex only policy is not discrimination towards gay and bisexual students: "We teach tolerance towards people who may be gay. That is not the issue at all. That's the confusion. It's against gay sexual activity."

What? How is bring a date of the same sex sexual activity? My prom date happened to be a guy, but there was no sexual activity there, he spent large chunks of my prom planning his with his girlfriend. Also how can someone be accepting of gay people but not gay sexual activity? It would be like saying women in the workforce are ok but only if they don't bring they promise not to be having their period. argggggh.

By the way, though this student is bisexual, her date is just a FRIEND, who happens to be female. apparently not okay though, so now the student has to attend prom by herself and her friend can't return the dress and shoes she bought for the dance (and no this policy wasn't announced before the school learned that someone was bringing a date of the same sex).

I wish I could say I was outraged and shocked, but it's a freaken Catholic school for crying out loud. Mother church never exactly been friendly to the gay community. Perhaps the only thing that makes me angry is that it's legal for it to happen. That in a public school that girl would have every legal right to go to prom, but because it's a religous (private) school that somehow they get to be above the law and can pull that, and not get sued.

I'm saddened that someone so young had to go through the drama of all that, when all she really wanted was to go to the prom and be a princess for the evening - like all her friends.
