And then there was 1

So mom and I got to the hospital in Philadelphia about an hour and a half before my grandmother died. She was so shriveled and had lost so much hair that she looked more like golem than my grandmother, I wouldn't have recognized her except that she has very distinctive teeth. She had still been talking and fairly alert when my Aunt called Sunday morning, but by the time we got there she was already gone, just her body was still functioning. I was in the car when she passed away because I couldn't stand to stay. My aunt had gone back to Chicago earlier that day because she had business to take care of, but my parents were with grandma the whole time. Tuesday I sorted out all the mail she had never seen and helped my parents clear out her room in the hospital part of the nursing home and up into her apartment in the assisted living part. Then I flew back and spent the night with
laurion. Now I'm trying to catch up on rest and school work. This is now the third year in a row that I've lost a grandparent and I'm beginning to think that me going to college is some kind of a curse on them. I'm trying not to be too worried about my mom's father but he's now the only grandparent I have left and he's waiting to find out the results of some test and why he's not metabolizing fats properly, not a good sign. Anyway I have much work to do so I'd best go get it done.

Date: 2004-04-08 06:26 am (UTC)I've noted that many college students lose grandparents during those four years. The coincidence really is more of the way generations move on. That doesn't make it easier, but it shouldn't make things harder either. People pass on when they pass on, no curses or blessings will prevent that.
If you need anything let me know. Sometime I'd like to hear more stories about her. From what you've said, it sounds like she was an amazing woman.
