I just got back from CT to day and back to lj and did not feel very happy reading my friend's list.
So the way I see it theater is for fun. I've always been a bit part actress at best. I've never had a big role and quite frankly don't have the talent to get one, but it's ok, because I just like to be part of a production. It really *really* irks me when people complain about what parts they got, or even not getting a part (sometimes you just don't fit the director's vision). Try and remeber that there are people out there who'd love to have any part at all (and I do mean any, I've literally been moving scenery in a high school play)and count yourself lucky to be part of something fun. If it's not fun and you don't like the directing team just don't do it, someone else will probably be happy to have your part. I have to say with the latest bout of things the only thing that really annoyed me was not even getting a "thanks but we can't use you call" and that may have been because I went so last minute that no paperwork was filled out. I honestly doubt this was a popularity contest, especially since [livejournal.com profile] laurion got a small part. I love hgim dearly but popular in the theater crowd he's not. I'm very sorry for the people who didn't get parts, didn't get what they wanted or even worse feel slighted, snubbed or otherwise hurt by the process. I hope those with parts have a great time doing this production and I'll be there clapping away for you all.
Ok now that that's done with I can discuss my fabulous weekend. Started moving into the apartment but taking it slowly (since I can). Saturday [livejournal.com profile] laurion and I moved a bunch of stuff to my place and my brother( [livejournal.com profile] aeshnor), his housemate, my dad, [livejournal.com profile] laurion and myself moved all the big stuff in the van that afternoon. My family then went out to dinner to celebrate my brother getting his welder's certification. I'm so very proud of him (as witness by the fact that I spent some of my precious time Thursday and Friday finding a good gift for him). We had a lovely meal at Ken's steakhouse and then went our separate ways. Sunday [livejournal.com profile] laurion and I went down to the cape area to see his grandfather and other asorted family. We did the parade and family cookout and then headed to CT with his parents. After some web searching we found that local fireworks would be in Old Saybrook over the water that night and went to see the lovely display. Back to the house to care for the cats and then pick up some stuff before going to his parent's camper in RI. Got there after midnight and quickly found comfort in a pillow. Monday was rainy and we got a slow start out. We finally got out on the road and went back to the house. We met up with [livejournal.com profile] laurion's brother and brother's girlfriend and all headed to the casino for the Sting/Annie Lennox concert. It was absolutely fantastic and a lot of fun. Annie Lennox was amazing. Sting was good, but would've been better if his mike had been turned up loud enough. We all had a great time though (yes [livejournal.com profile] shprintzah I started humming "Watching You Sleep" in my head when Sting sang "Every Breath You Take", what would our friendship be withpout stalking songs:) ?). Went home had ice cream and slept in. Waited around most of the day for [livejournal.com profile] laurion's car to be fixed. Got to hear "cute" (read embarrassing)stories about my sweetie from his parents, saw some of the required baby pictures and then we headed home. All in all it was a wonderful weekend.

The thing about casting is this: just because I will take a minor role doesn't mean I won't be disappointed if I believed I had a strong possibility of getting something I really wanted - and there will always be characters who I will personally find more fun than others.

In this case I feel compoundly bad because I get to watch my friends not get any involvement at all in a project they really wanted. In short, the angst that you're seeing is not just 100% egotism.

I'm not saying some of it wasn't warrented or that it's all egotism, but it happens with every production I've ever been a part of. Like I said I'm a small role actress and it just annoys me how few people can really live by the "no small roles only small actors" motto. Some whining is expected but every single time I've done theater I've heard complaints of director meaness and no acceptance that one simply not fit in with what the director imagined. Even the best actors aren't always right for a certain production.

I'm envious of the Sting/Lennox concert, even though I've seen the Stingmeister a couple of times before. Glad you had a moment of stalking song joy.

As for casting complains, there always will be grumbles over casting, and lj is whine magnet. There are folks with legitimate beefs, though. Four rejections of a good player is a pattern.
