One of my favorite parts of this season is the singing. It's not Christmas for me until my mother and I sing "Silver Bells" together (and out of tune). Since this is my journal and I can do what I like I'm posting the words to some of my favortie seasonal songs. Hopefully this will prevent me from having to run home and look up the words when I forget them.
Eight Candles Shine For the Macabees
Eight Candles Shine For the Macabees
Down from the mountain with Liberty's sword,
They came like the flame of the Lord.
Chorus: Dance the horah, light the menorah,
This is the time for joy,
The road to freedom we take today,
With the Macabees leading the way.
Eight Candles Shine For the Macabees
Eight Candles Shine For the Macabees
The tyrant was routed with all of his men,
And the temple made holy again.
Chorus
Eight Candles Shine For the Macabees
Eight Candles Shine For the Macabees
Hanukah's children will never forget
The glory that shines for us yet.
Chorus
What did the little lamb say
Who saw the Babt in the hay?
Baa,baa, Mary's son,
He looks out for everyone.
All the sheep are in the fold,
No more lambies lost and cold,
Said the little lamb child,
Meek and mild in Bethlehem.
What did the little calf say
Who saw the Babt in the hay?
Moo,moo, Mary's son,
He looks out for everyone.
All the kine are housed and fed,
But no place for Jesus' head,
Said the little calf child,
Meek and mild in Bethlehem.
What did the little chick say
Who saw the Babt in the hay?
Weet, weet, Mary's son,
He looks out for everyone.
No morre wee ones pushed aside,
Put to scorn at Christmastide,
Said the little chick child,
Meek and mild in Bethlehem.
What did the little foal say
Who saw the Babt in the hay?
Ay, ay, Mary's son,
He looks out for everyone.
Time for work and time to feast,
Time for joy for man and beast,,
Said the little foal child,
Meek and mild in Bethlehem.
God rest you Unitarians, let nothing you dismay.
Remember there's no evidence there was a Christmas day.
When Christ was born just is not known, no matter what men say.
Glad tidings of reason and fact, reason and fact.
Glad tidings of reason and fact.
There was no Star of Bethlehem; there was no angel song;
There could have been no wise men for the journey was too long.
Thge stories in the Bible are historiacally wrong.
Glad tidings of reason and fact, reason and fact.
Glad tidings of reason and fact.
Much of our Christmas customs come from Persia and from Greece,
From Solstice celebrations of the acient Middle East.
We know our so-called holiday is but a pagan feast--
Glad tidings of reason and fact, reason and fact.
Glad tidings of reason and fact.
The first two songs come from a Children's Albumn called "Artichokes, Griddle Cakes and Other Good Things" written by Malvina Reynolds. She obtained some fame for the song "Ticky-tacky Houses" in the 1960's and has written quite a bit of music protesting society, but never really got the recognition she deserved. The last song is from a book spoofing the old UU hymnal called "Hymns for the Cerebration of Strife" by Christopher G. Raible and contains many more songs, that are really funny, but mostly only to UU's.
