So a while back I posted about my on-going problems with my ovarian cyst. Last monday i had an ultrasound to chekc the progress and the upshot is that while the high estrogen pill is giving me much lighter, less crampy periods it didn't shrink the cyst. Actually to be more acurate the cyst has enlarged by a few centimeters though it still looks benign. This means a few things, the first is that a prescription for more tylenol with codeine will be in my hands in a few days, which is good since I have 5 pills left and the monthly pain is beginning again. The second is thing this means is that i have to have surgery. I'm scheduled to go in, in about 4 weeks (though if the pain becomes agonizing I have to go to the ER and have it done as an emergency procedure, I'm hoping to make it through the 4 weeks). I have to miss some school but it should be a day procedure unless pathology finds something bad. I have to take an exam right before the procedure which means I'll have to remember neuro path on an empty stomach. I'm really nervous abut this for all the reasons I posted about last time. Also my mom kindly pointed out that I'm likely to get more "tape scars" from this (the only other time I had surgery was when i was 8 and it's how we found out that I have an allergy to medical tape. The scar from the blister three days of wearing tape caused is larger than the incision scar). It should all go fine but I'm still not happy.

Also, if you're allergic to tape, tell the hospital staff - I'd imagine they have different adhesives available, in case that sort of thing happens....

I'm allergic to all permutations of medical tape, even all the hypoallergenic stuff, I swear the universe is still laughing about that one.

Date: 2006-10-11 09:58 pm (UTC)I had a very similar thing done on an emergency basis. I had a very large dermoid cyst on my right ovary, didn't know it until the thing was the size of a grapefruit, twisted, and cut off it's own blood supply. (That was easily by far the most painful thing I have ever experienced, including 2 natural births) The surgery wasn't that bad, and was done laparoscopically, which I suspect is what they'll do for you. Do you know if they're just removing the cyst or are they removing the whole ovary? Recovery wasn't that bad either. I think I was only on the heavy duty pain killers for a couple of days, then I think it was just ibuprofen or something of similar strength. I'd offer you more support around the actual surgery, but I'll still be recovering from my own surgery then. If you want to talk about it more, feel free to call me.
